DMHA has popped up as one of the best replacements for DMAA since the DMAA ban [1]. Not everybody knows DMAA, but this was the strongest pre-workout ingredient in recent years. Like DMAA, DMHA can provide users with a great increase in energy, focus and pump. This has made DMHA a very interesting and desired stimulant for people who are looking for a strong pre-workout. It is important to realize that there are two forms of DMHA. There is the 2-amino-6-methylheptane and the 2-amino-5-methylheptane version. We describe the 2-amino-6-methylheptane version since it has been studied more and because it is cheaper for users.

Functions of DMHA

DMHA has many structural similarities with DMAA. As a result, they have many similar effects. This has made DMHA an interesting supplement for athletes who want to improve their training. However, not only can it improve exercise performance, but it is also known for its ability to help with bronchitis and some other conditions [2].

Improved energy, focus, pump and exercise performance
DMHA is mainly used because it can significantly increase energy, focus and pump [3]. But these are not the only benefits this product offers. In the past, this supplement has also been used in the treatment of bronchitis, due to its ability to act as a decongestant and bronchodilator [2][4]. Being a decongestant, it constricts blood vessels, resulting in reduced swelling of our mucous membranes. This decreased swelling increases our ability to breathe which may results in an increased training performance. As mentioned earlier, it can also serve as a bronchodilator. This means that the use of this supplement can widen the bronchi. This may also improve airflow through our body which can result in an improvement in exercise capacity. Studies also found that DMHA can increase pain threshold [2]. This effect can also result in a more intensive workout, with less fatigue and better results.

Mood enhancement
Furthermore, DMHA has a similar structure to compounds considered to be monoamine release agents [5][6]. This means that it is a central nervous stimulant which can increase the dopamine and noradrenaline in our body [2]. The increase of dopamine and noradrenaline can contribute to the enhanced euphoria and wakefulness experienced by users [7].

Who can use DMHA ?

This is a strong stimulant, so we do not recommend this product if you are new to pre-workout supplements. This stimulant is also not recommended for athletes who are being tested for doping or for people with serious health problems, high blood pressure or heart complaints. Due to its strong effects, it is only recommended for healthy and experienced pre-workout users.

How should I use DMHA ? / Dosages

Currently, there are no official dosing recommendations. Based on current knowledge and user feedback, dosages between 100mg and 150mg are recommended. However, we recommend starting with a lower amount to see how you respond to this supplement. In terms of timing, it should be used 15-30 minutes before a workout for the best results. Both researchers and customers state that the effects last for several hours [8]. Therefore, we do not recommend using this product late at night as it can reduce sleep quality.

How does this supplement work ?

DMHA and DMAA can release dopamine and norepinephrine through the activation of certain receptors. Meanwhile, this supplement also prevents the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine. This keeps dopamine and norepinephrine active longer, contributing to the potential increase in energy and focus. In addition, DMHA can also provide more energy by increasing the production of cAMP by stimulating adenylyl cyclase.

Stacking / combining DMHA

DMHA can be stacked with a variety of other supplements. For example, it can be combined with creatine, BCAA’s and many other pre-workout products. Most people combine DMHA with another pre-workout product (for example C4 or N.O.xplode) before a workout. When you use it in combination with other pre-workout products that contain many stimulating ingredients, it is important to check if you are not consuming too many stimulating ingredients simultaneously.

Where does DMHA come from ?

This stimulant occurs in nature, but is also made synthetically. In nature it occurs in the bark of the Juglans Regia tree and in the fruit of the Kigelia Africana tree.

Safety & competitive use

Safety
Some supplement companies have been selling products containing DMHA for at least 4 years. There have been no serious reported issues, when consumed correctly. In addition, there has been a large study regarding the safety of the very similar stimulant DMAA. A study conducted by the Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health, found that DMAA is safe for healthy individuals and does not result in clinically relevant adverse health effects [9]. This study has not only focussed on the effects of a single intake, but also at the effects of a 12 week intake. The researchers have indicated that there is no evidence that consumption of normal doses DMAA would lead to negative health effects [9]. This indicates that stimulants like these, are most likely safe to use, when used responsible and by healthy individuals. However, it is important to note that consumption of DMAA and DMHA can potentially cause a temporary increase in blood pressure and heart rate when high doses are used [2][9].

Competitive use
DMHA is currently legal in most countries. However, the use is no longer allowed by some sports associations. If you participate in professional sports competitions, we recommend that you check with the relevant sports association whether the use of this product is allowed.

Correct use
A dietary supplement can contribute to a healthy and active lifestyle. However, it should not be a substitute for a healthy lifestyle and a varied diet. The recommended dosage should not be exceeded, since side effects may occur otherwise. Temporary side effects of DMHA can include: higher heart rate, higher blood pressure, restlessness, tremors, and a decreased sleep quality. In rare cases, these side effects can also occur with normal doses. If side effects occur, consumption should be discontinued.

As with any supplement, we advise users to consult a physician before use. In particular if you use medication or have health complaints. This product should not be used by people which have high blood pressure or heart problems. In addition, this supplement should not be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Furthermore, this product should not be used by persons under 18 years of age and must be kept out of the reach of children. Keep this product in a cool and dry place to maintain the quality.

Other information

It is important to note that there have been quality issues with products that claim to contain DMHA. A researcher tested six supplements which mention DMHA on the label, they found that only one of them actually contained DMHA [10]. The others products often contained DMAA. This is often done due to the lower price of DMAA.
